Contemporary Open Plan Kitchen Extension

With a requirement for a larger space for a growing family, we were asked to provide design options for an addition to the rear of the building, replacing the existing cramped dark kitchen and opening up the inefficient cellular layout of the existing building.

‘A room for relaxation’.

Important in open plan homes are the spaces for people to unwind and decompress in solitude away from the communal hub of the home. Finished in dark tones the snug provides a space for relaxing and thinking.

‘Crisp detailing with modern materials’.

In contrast to the traditional materials of the host building the extension is built from modern materials. Slender aluminium profile doors and frameless roof lights lend finesse to the design. The larch timber cladding, untreated and left to silver to a natural patina is installed vertically with expressed fixings, a nice contemporary touch.

‘Contemporary design lifts the traditional setting’.

In contrast to the traditional pitched roof masonry buildings prevalent in the surrounding area, a bold contemporary timber clad addition was chosen to create a contrasting addition.

‘Hidden services allow for modern open plan living’.

A section of the existing workshop was allocated to a utility room, allowing daily services to be relocated out of the open plan space and thereby removing clutter and noise. The addition of a ground floor WC improves function and circulation of the building.
