Victorian Cottage Side & Rear Extensions

Set within an idyllic leafy village in the Blackmore Vale, this pretty cottage forms one half of a pair of Victorian semi-detached former estate worker cottages.

Carefully considered extensions and internal re-modelling transform this two bedroom cottage into a three bedroom two bathroom family home.

Project: One and two storey extensions and complete internal re-model

Location: Blackmore Vale, Dorset

A traditional exterior conceals a modern family home’.

The side and rear extensions allow the outdated cellular layout to be opened up and provide a spacious, modern, open plan family room with wonderful views over the garden.

A double aspect Master Bedroom with a walk in wardrobe and En-Suite facilities is positioned within the side extension.

The reconfigured first floor provides a generous landing featuring vaulted ceilings and roof lights leading to two further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

External landscaping allows for ample off road parking and a new timber clad double garage with workshop.

The side extension is detailed with quoining referencing the existing’.

The two storey extension is built from red brick elevations with a soft brick quoin detailing to match the original cottage, window and door surround details also respect the traditional design.

The walls of the extension are set back sufficiently allowing the quoin detailing of the existing cottage to remain visible.

The roofline is purposely lowered stepping the extension with the landscape reducing its impact on both the host cottage and the street scene.

The result, a design which respects the aesthetic and detail of the original cottage, is subservient in scale and position and does not challenge the authority of the original cottage ensuring it remains identifiable.

‘An open plan kitchen for family living’.

The rear extension provides a bright and spacious kitchen, dining and family room. Well lit by roof lights in the vaulted ceiling, bi-fold doors to the rear flood the interior with light and capture views over the garden and the wider countryside beyond.

‘Subtle additions enhance the building and its setting’.

The carefully considered extensions provide a finished building which appears as a series of subtle additions representing an ‘evolved composition’. The original ‘dominant’ cottage, its ‘subservient’ side extension, and the ‘lightweight’ more recent rear addition. Each individually distinguishable whilst remaining complimentary.
