Country Cottage Extension And Renovation

Whilst not Listed itself, this charming Victorian Cottage commands a prominent position within the Conservation Area, making significant contribution to its character. Wishing to extend, though with a previous planning refusal, we were approached by the owners for advice as to how best achieve a planning approval.

Interior Design: Interior staging and photography by Little Barn Door

Traditional rural cottage with chimney, a two storey brick extension, single storey timber weather boarded extension, bi-fold glazed doors, surrounded by a private lawn and garden with bushes, under a blue sky with clouds.

‘Traditional detailing and reclaimed materials enhance the original cottage’

Restructuring the basic footprint and form of the proposed extension by recessing proposed walls and stepping ridge lines to reflect the site topography significantly reduced the impact of the proposal, not only on the cottage but the wider setting of the Conservation Area.

Traditional shaker style kitchen with hand painted pastel coloured cabinets, open plan dining room with table, granite kitchen worktops, Belfast sink and a window with blinds.. Green pendant lights hang over the island.

‘Re-modelling of the interior space allows a light filled kitchen breakfast room’

Incorporating the former rear hall into the main body of the exiting building we were able to provide a large galley kitchen with breakfast area. Hand painted traditional style shaker kitchen units couple with a central island creating a bright, flexible, cooking and socialising space for the whole family.

‘Well proportioned extensions enhance the existing cottage’

The two storey extension, constructed from red brick, compliments the original cottage in material, detail and style whilst remaining subservient in scale. Handmade bricks sourced from the same manufacturer as the original cottage are a nice touch.

The single storey timber weather-boarded addition presents as an outbuilding, perhaps a potting shed. Its impact reduced through the use of contrasting lightweight materials and simple fenestration commonly found in rural environments.

‘Bi-fold doors & vaulted ceilings create a sense of space’

The two storey extension, constructed from red brick, compliments the original cottage in material, detail and style and forms the large open plan living / dining area central to the home.

Bi-fold doors frame views into the garden and open countryside beyond, providing a comfortable communal space for family life.

Bedroom interior design, corner with a bedside table, a patterned lampshade, a bed with chopped pillows, and blinds on a window, neutral colour scheme.

‘Reclaimed materials and details complete the building’

A substantial addition to a locally important cottage creating a three bedroom two bathroom family home which does not challenge the authority of the original cottage, ensuring it remains identifiable whilst enhancing the wider setting.
